Asian Architecture

Project 1  Case Study Paper

We were assigned to visit the Belum Rainforest Resort and conduct an research after identifying our research area. The research area I had chosen was passive architecture design and the topic chosen was "A Study on Shading Devices Adopted by Belum Rainforest Resort to Reduce Heat Gain". An oral presentation had to be presented and a written paper of 3000 words. This project was to help us learn more about sustainability design in Asia.

Reflection:

I had analysed and studied in depth on my research area of the Belum Rainforest Resort. In the process of analysing, I had been able to identify elements of sustainable design and made interpretation of it specifically on Belum Rainforest Resort. I also learned to summarise ideas into a few main points for effective presentation.

Project 2  Documentation Study (Group work with individual task)

In a group of 5, we discussed to have our site at Jalan Tun Sambanthan which was near to where we stayed and easier to return to the site for another visit. We have to understand the origins of the street and analyse the architecture elements the buildings had. As different people would have different opinion, each member in the group had to contribute at least 10 photos and compile them into a photo book to be published online. An A2 size street map was to be done manually too reflecting the significant elements along the street.

Reflection:
After this project, I was able to describe the historical development of Jalan Tun Sambanthan and the transitions it had gone through. Jalan Tun Sambanthan is a developing area with the its transit hub but still conserving the traditional side of it enhancing the contrast. I can also identify and interpret the architectural language related to Asian architecture and urbanism as this street has significant character in architectural terms.
