Building Construction 1

This is the first module of the building construction subject. It has taught me to understand the principles and practices of construction technology related to construction site, soil mechanics, building envelope, and building components from below ground to above ground.

Assignment 1 Experiencing Construction: Experiencing, Documenting, and Analysing Construction Process

In a group of 9, we have to select 2 on going construction sites which have covered almost all of the topics in the syllabus. We have to identify and observe then analyse the different types of building element and its construction process, details and materials. An A3 report containing suitable drawings and analysis of the construction has to be completed.

Reflection:

Through this assignment, we are introduced to the basic principles and procedures of the construction process through the actual sites we have found which are located in Glenmarie Cove, Klang and Taman Bukit Segar, Cheras. We have understood the details (from foundation to the roof) and sequence of construction process after we observe and analyse what we have seen on site. We take in consideration of the site safety and even of the plants and machineries. Due to the differences of the both sites, we are able to compare and contrast between two sites which enable us to learn more about the details of the construction.We also have to produce sketches which are suitable and are able to explain in detailed of a certain component. This is a group assignment so we have learnt how to communicate well with the meetings and discussions that we have been through.

Project 2 Integrated Construction Detailing/Drawings

From the design which is produced in Project 2B in Architectural Design Studio 2, I have to propose three details which are:

a) Roof (Flat roof)

b) Superstructure (Wall -Panel Siding)

c) Foundation (Pad Foundation)

An A2 board containing the three architectural detailing with appropriate drawings summarising my research including description of the material, standard sizes of the product and additional technical information has to be recorded.

Reflection:

This assignment allows me to create an awareness of how buildings are built under practical consideration. I have to demonstrate my knowledge I have learnt through the previous lecture and add suitable images which are drawn manually and apply it on my own retreat house design. This project also emphasizes on proposing details for the certain detail of the building with the help of my lecturer for the professional opinion and analysis.
