Survey of visual and physical properties of building materials and their application, while encompassing energy saving and recycled materials.

Exercise

I am to document my findings on materials through "Material Catalog" which consists of an image of the space where the material is used, a close up photograph of the material and description of the materials onto an A2 presentation board.

Through this exercise, I am able to recognise different types of materials and their properties as below:

Project 1 Materiality of Space: An experiential exploration
In a group of 5, we have to select a commercial/residential building which allow you to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module.

Task A: Group (Two A2 boards. One mood board)

1. Brief introduction of selected building and reason for selecting the space.
2. Mood board.

Task B: Individual (One A2 board)

1. Experiential analysis of the Material & Space

Reflection:
After this project, we learn to identify the various types of building material and understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of building. With the information we collect, we produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties. We also learn analytic skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building.

Project 2 Integration: Material Specification
This project is integrated with Architectural Design Studio 1 Final Project. From Design Studio 1 Final Project, I have to think of the most suitable materials to apply onto my design and record them on one or two A3 size boards with a reference.

Reflection:
Through this project, I get to explore various types of building materials and technology and learn how to identify them. I also fully understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment, etc. With that, I can apply my understanding of various types of building materials which affect the tactile and chemical properties of my design produced from Design Studio Final Project.
